Ingredients-

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • Flour for coating

  • 1 egg

  • Vegetable oil for frying (for traditional method)

  • 1 Orange (or lemon) zest and juice

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup rice wine vinegar or cider vinegar

  • 1/2 cup honey

  • 1 tsp minced garlic

  • 1 tsp minced ginger

  • 2 tbsp cornflour

  • 4 tbsp water

  • Noodles, rice, or vegetables for serving


Instructions-

Step 1: Preparing the Chicken

  1. If you prefer a healthier option, you can skip the frying step and add the raw chicken breast to the hot citrus sauce in step 3. However, for a traditional approach, dice the chicken breast and coat each piece in flour, then dip in beaten egg, and coat in flour again.

  2. If you choose the traditional method, shallow fry the coated chicken pieces in vegetable oil until they are golden brown. Place them on a plate and set aside.

Step 2: Making the Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, combine 1/4 cup of soy sauce, the zest and juice of one orange (or lemon), 1/3 cup of rice wine vinegar or cider vinegar, 1/2 cup of honey, 1 tsp of minced garlic, and 1 tsp of minced ginger.

  2. Simmer this sauce over medium heat for approximately 10 minutes until it thickens and becomes fragrant.

Step 3: Finalizing the Dish

  1. In a small bowl, mix 2 tbsp of cornflour with 4 tbsp of water to create a slurry.

  2. Add this slurry to the simmering sauce, whisking constantly to thicken the sauce.

  3. If you fried the chicken, add the cooked chicken pieces to the sauce, ensuring they are well coated. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes until everything is piping hot.

  4. If you prefer to skip frying, add the raw chicken breast to the sauce at this step and simmer until the chicken is fully cooked.

Serving:

  1. Serve your Orange (or Lemon) Chicken with your choice of noodles, rice, or fresh vegetables. The sauce pairs wonderfully with all of these options.
