Ingredients:
4 short ribs
1 bulb garlic
3-inch piece ginger
2 tbsp tomato purée
2 beef oxo cubes
700ml water
10 star anise
3 tbsp Chinese five spice
Salt and pepper, to taste
Hoisin sauce, for serving
Method:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F).
Prepare the Short Ribs: Season the short ribs generously with salt and pepper. In a large oven-safe tray or roasting pan, heat some oil over medium-high heat. Sear the short ribs on all sides until nicely browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer the seared short ribs to the oven-safe tray.
Prepare the Braising Liquid: Cut the garlic bulb in half horizontally. Roughly chop the ginger. Add the halved garlic bulb, chopped ginger, tomato purée, beef oxo cubes, water, star anise, and Chinese five spice to the tray with the short ribs.
Braise the Short Ribs: Tightly cover the tray with foil to seal in the moisture. Place the tray in the preheated oven and roast for 4 hours. Check periodically to ensure the ribs are not drying out; if needed, add more water to the tray. If the short ribs are on the smaller side, they may be done in 3 hours, so check every hour.
Glaze the Ribs: When checking the ribs, you can also glaze them with hoisin sauce for added flavor and richness.
Serve: Once the short ribs are tender and falling off the bone, remove them from the oven. Serve the short ribs hot, drizzled with additional hoisin sauce if desired.
Enjoy! Serve your Chinese-style braised short ribs with your favourite side dishes and enjoy the tender, flavourful meat.
